I had a department change at my job and for the first few days they sat me next to someone else to get trained. Let me say before I start that this is not about religion but it is relevant, I'm atheist, straight and very open-minded about sexuality (I respect other people's sexual orientation, and don't discriminate). He's gay, and a follower of Islam (He's not from the middle east or anywhere near), he thinks that he has the devil in him, and that sexual orientation is learned, and that women in Saudi Arabia like to dress the way the do, you get the point Like any normal person I started to talk with him while I was being trained, nothing too personal, things like what was your major, fave artist, etc but I of course I made sure to imply in one of our conversations that I was straight. Well, after I finished training (we work in the same department now) was still being friendly to him, but just normal things like saying hi, again, nothing too personal. Then he comes and gives me his email address and phone number, which was fine. Then a few days later he asks me if I didn't lose his email address and number, at this point I'm not starting to like this, so I stopped enabling this guy, and started acting more detached but still being polite. He called me once, and we have an interesting conversation about politics, social issues, and things of that nature, and we respectfully disagreed about almost everything, but after that I realized that the guy had some serious self-esteem issues, plus a myriad of other problems that would impress even Freud. I go on vacation and I need to call someone at my department to do something for me at work, do me a favor, but he's the only one that I know or whose contact I have, and this is very important so I called the guy from abroad just to find out that the guy had an incident which I'm not going to explain (it wasn't his fault) but he has a fractured ankle or something like that and he's on disability. So I pretend that I'm calling to say hi because I don't want to look like an idiot. I mean, the guy is miserable at home, and had a horrible experience so I pretend to be sympathetic, but what a mistake this was, because now I have this person thinking that I called him from another country to say hi. This is when the bad part really begins, when I come back. Now the guys is texting me. First I was just to say what's up, but then it was to tell me that he reeeeally appreciated our (imaginary) friendship, or that I was a very handsome and intelligent person, or he would use the word "honey" and they next to it: "just kidding, lol". He called me but I didn't answer the phone whenever he did it, and never replied the text messages. Then he started using "I love you" on each text message, but I wouldn't reply, I would just say hi at work, and that I didn't see the messages because I don't check my phone. Luckily our department is not tiny so I don't have to sit next to him. Then he sent me an email because we have a secret Santa soon and he wanted me to know that he was going to make sure that he got me because there was nobody else that he wanted to give a gift more than me, and that I shouldn't drift away from him just because people were saying stuff at work, that we were meant to be friends and be together, that God had a plan for me and that I shouldn't let other people separate me from those who love me. At this moment I felt like I had to start taking action. I already had an experience going out with someone with profound emotional problems, plus I'm very passionated and read a lot about psychology, that's what I intend to study soon, so I saw all the red flags. I replied politely but with a serious tone. I explain that the “I love you's” and “honey's” were very inappropriate, that no one was talking about us or trying to separate us, that I didn't believe my destiny was to be with him, that idolizing other people is not healthy for him, that he was creating a fantasy in his head about us and trying to get me involved without even asking me, and that if I believed in God that was fine with me but that he needed to stop trying to force me to be a believer, that I was independent and that I didn't need a savior (that's how he portrayed himself in the email) in my life. His reply redefined the word denial. He basically said I was delusional, that he sometimes overcompensated because he doesn't have a lot of friends, but that that was “it”. That he didn't love me, and he was just trying to assess my character, and that he had determined that I was incapable of affection (I just have to laugh at this one). I replied saying that if he wasn't serious telling me that he loved me and such that was even worse, because he was trying to manipulate me, and analyze me for no reason at all. But on the last emails we make sure to tell each other that was just an email thing and that there was no reason to act spitefully at work, which we did. We didn't say anyWe didn't say anything to each other besides the typical “Hi” or “Good nite”. He leaves earlier than me would come near where I work and stand next to me before leaving, I would just continue working, and ignore him, until he said bye. We work on the phones, so he stared calling my extension to talk to me. “Hi, how's everything going?” but I would just say, yes, no, he stopped that after a few days. Well, the secret Santa is close and he indeed got my name. He wanted to buy me $100 shoes, which I told him clearly not to do, and he says he won't. But he emailed me like 3 times to ask me, I told him to just get me a cheap gift card. There is someone that I have been speaking with for over 3 years. We use to hate each other. Our differences in politic views were the biggest difference. He hated my government. He would make fun of my christian views. He follows Islam. I however was very open to his views. Even getting down to studying his religion and opening myself up to other views in the world. Afterall I wanted my new friend to feel that not all Americans are awful people. Not all Americans want to kill, steal and destroy....... In fact I dont know anyone in the States in my neck of the woods that does.... but he doesnt know that. I decided to set our differences aside and find some common ground. I felt so strong about it that I really sensed this person would make a big impact on my life. Now 3 years later, it was the toughest friendship I have ever had to go through. Now, we have fewer spats and he isnt hateful towards me at all. He said that he wants to marry me. He said he is marrying me not my country and that he understands that we will always have differences. I am not sure. His father is a fighter pilot for the Army in Egypt and his views make me a lil uneasy. Also, I am volunteering in Egypt this Feb. and he expects me to stay with his family. He gets mad at me quickly now. Wonders why I havent spoken to him. He told me yesterday that he doesnt want me speaking to other men. WTF???????? I have a very bad feeling about this. He says America will burn one day.... He will make sure I am staying in Egypt when that happens........... This is getting very weird... Is he just talkin trash????? I feel like hiding... LOL.... I think I attracted the wrong person into my life....Yes, due to the fact I have invested so much time in this person, I have to admit I have much love for him moreResolved Question: The Early Modern World ?

I am a student in America majoring in Intercultural Studies. I understand how ignorant many Americans are concerning other cultures. For the sake of breaking down cultural barriers and silly stereotypes (including my own), I wanted to offer the option of anonymous honesty here among people of different cultures. Where are you from? If you could tell an American how you feel about the United States, what would like to say (religion, politics, mannerisms, stereotypes, anything)? What do you like about America/Americans? What do you dislike? Are there any misconceptions about your country that you wish Americans knew? Answer however you wish! Just please be honest. Thanks for your response!I think U.A.O. makes a great point. I agree that Americans are certainly not the only ones ignorant to other cultures. The reason I didn't flip the coin on this question is simply because, as an American, I already know what "we would like to tell foreigners", so to speak. But if that is a twist to the question somebody else would like to address, by all means, please do so! moreResolved Question: What do you think about politics and Islam?
I have seen many, many questions on here about the recent attacks on India. It's a tragedy of course, but I've also seen a lot of come out of it. I've seen a lot of on here about Islam in general, as their extremists are incredibly violent. I agree, it's terrible and what those ists do is terrible. However, I'm really struggling to understand why people feel so much toward Muslims in general now. I'm a Catholic and I know many Muslims and am currently dating one. They're some of the most peaceful people I know. In fact, my boyfriend is all about world peace and embraces ideals about loving your neighbor and being kind to everyone. I'm very conservative and my views are a lot more okay with than his are. I was just wondering why everyone seemed to be so filled with toward Muslims. Was anyone on here singled out and attacked by all the Muslims of the world or something? Because there seems to be a lot of and bigotry on here. I wonder if any people on here who all Muslims have even met one before. I simply fail to understand why people are making those generalizations. I have studied Islam in depth and it's actually one of the most peaceful religions out there. There just so happen to be extremists that interpret their Koran differently and therefore make the entire religion look bad. But I think that any level headed person would realize that there's going to be extremists in any faction. In short, can someone on here who speaks out against Islam as a religion (calling it "violent" and such) and Muslims as people please explain to me why it is that they feel this way? Why is it that because there's violent extremists that the whole religion and all it's followers are suddenly all violent and bad people?Lovehandles: just wondering, have you read the Koran? Because you seem to be so knowledgeable about it. Sure current event wise it's not looking so pretty, but the religion as a whole is not bad at all.Wafflehouse: I completely agree that radical Islam is a huge threat to society. I would never say that at all. All I'm saying is that people generalize all Muslims into the radical group. It just doesn't make sense to me how so many people can believe that just because there are extremists that all people in the group are automatically bad people. But you're right. Radical Islam scares me just as much as the next person.Ralphharris: yes many Muslims have been, but what I'm asking is how is it that just because there are radical Muslims that all Muslims are radical?BHO is a Marxist: first of all, they're not pagan. They're monotheistic. Second of all, I'm not asking about all Muslims being bad. I'm asking why people generalize other people.Tigress: it's really easy to tell the difference. There are tons of Muslims that don't condone it. It just depends on who you talk to. There's tons of them who say ism is wrong. Once again, you can't generalize a group of people into one group. It's not fair to do to a group of people. Many people are good. Most of the people are good. You can't say that all people are bad just because you have a small faction of people who can't get along. moreResolved Question: Are we all living meaningless lives within humanities artificial constructs?
Why do we need to live our lives to the fullest potential? I have done many things and achieved no real sense of satisfaction from them. I've become bored with pleasure and with pain. What does it really matter if you can achieve anything, help somebody else or believe in yourself? Recently I have been trying many new things in the hope of discovering a new desire or something novel that I will find something worth pursuing and ultimately fulfilling. I have worked for many charities as a volunteer; I have studied and practiced religions, finance and the sciences. I have utilized many of these tools and I've also developed good social skills that have helped me get better and better jobs right up to becoming a wealthy director of my own companies. To add to the conditioned social framework I have also engaged in creative pursuits like drawing, music, drama, authoring and sculpture. Now I am not claiming to be the best in any of these pursuits. It's important to me that I've tried them and experienced them for myself in my quest to discover something I'm actually interested in. Something with enough gravity to convince me life has any real meaning. I am 40 now and I've had plenty of stimulation in my life. Everything from sex to drugs to rock and roll. I've engaged in public speaking and also in meditation and yogic breathing. I don't want to do these things any more because they become totally boring in their addictiveness. I've experimented with sex and social relationships extensively and it all leads to boredom in the end. Especially when you're making someone else happy. The outcome of all these experiences I conclude to be pointless, apart from proving I am addicted to selfishness. I still draw a giant blank when I think about my life and everybody else’s. I think other people must be in denial if they think playing a violin, being a celebrity, preaching like a pope or running a country actually has a point in this vast universe. They're all artificial and abstract. The only mean anything to the artificial fabric of humanity. I mean we all engage ourselves in what are essentially meaningless activities for what reason? It only means something to us because we pretend it has. The universe doesn't care about humanity or idea about meaning. Great stars devour and destroy each other all over the universe. If nature wants to eradicate us with something like a huge volcanic eruption or if we do it to ourselves with global warming or GM foods it doesn't really matter. It doesn't matter if you are Mother Teresa, John Travolta, Tiger Woods, Mozart, Einstein or the nobody next door. Legacy ultimately stands for nothing apart from in the artificial minds of human collective memory. Ultimately nothing is fulfilling to anybody because whatever you and your society create will be loved and hated at the same time. Think of everything; population explosion, war, religion, politics, capitalism, consumerism, GM foods, drugs, antibiotics, pesticides, consumerism. It would take 8 planet earths to give everybody the same lifestyle that we have in the developed world and I'm nowhere near happy. The fact that so many people are starving in Africa, India and Indonesia is because they're growing food for us (those with money and power). Also because we're turning their worlds into desert through deforestation and water shortages so they can grow crops to support our artificial way of life; for us to have furniture and fuel for our cars. What a pointless world? Even if everybody had equal access to resources the point of living in the grand universe is still pointless. We are all in this rat run working jobs most of us hate to buy things most of us don't need. It's a living nightmare. So we may amuse ourselves with gadgets and technology other human life gets ignored. So what's the point? Collectively we are doing a pretty good job of destroying the only known environment for our future generations so there's no real purpose to our lives. Even if we did clean up our act for future generations, unimaginable events in the future are bound to wipe us out like the 99.9% of all previous life that existed on Earth that's now extinct. The Sun stops shining one day and we'll all cease to exist. If it's all hopeless then our existence is futile so what's the point. Read this article first http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?%91Two-tone%92_hair_pupil_is_banned&in_article_id=412061&in_page_id=34 Why is this girls father and her friends allowing a head teacher to take a student out of her classes disrupting her education simply as she died her hair blonde... not even punky multi colour and even if she did so what? how is it effecting her maths or history or disrupting anything and sure ain’t bullying. Why are they not forcing though threats or pain or legal action the students right to learn if she wants to regardless of how she looks as long as she wants to learn, does not bully or unjustly disrupt the class.? Why not pin the head teacher down and forcibly tattoo slogans like justice for goths, punks, hippies, emos, blondes etc... rights for all? And screw hair extensions of multi colour into his head then buy his own rules Mr Taylor can’t be allowed simply as not looking right regardless of experience and qualification. How about branding or tattooing ‘Judge only brains & personality not appearance’ Over the heads face.? Rules are not rules... you would not allow discrimination over skin colour so why on appearance unless it’s liked to gangs, neo nazi groups, abusive religions etc.? The school says its about application of rules and standards but how about the standard that you should judge someone by who they are not how they look, by their ability to study, do a job, if they prey or help others and award those who would attack the head teacher in defence of their friend for sticking up for other, then start attacking employers under the delusion that a suit and short hair cut makes you professional. It does not we can dress up a gorilla in a suit. Just like others stood up for women’s, gays, black peoples rights and to stop jews being gassed. It makes a whole lot more sense then killing each other over which postcode you come from which kids do now and wont get expelled for but change your hair colour a the head teachers can wreck your future. What message does that send out? It could also be a good lesson in politics and human jights, morality and justice. If someone is wronged everything should stand up and force justice to be done outnumbering those in the wrong 30-1quote You make some good points in your question , but the simple point being is that she broke the rules ,period , its open and shut after that , like say a speeding fine you could argue that the road was empty , Surely the lesson should be that rules should only exist if fully justiced and the spirit not the letter of the law should be adhered to. Examples of past rules that needed breaking. SLAVOURY USED TO BE LEGAL & you could rape your female 'property' ESCAPED SLAVES COULD BE crippled... WAS THAT RIGHT? NO If islamic countires they allow stoning to death & female genital mutilation in fact enforce it would you stand by and let someone be punished for trying to protect their daughter from having her clitorus sliced off?/ stoned for dating or executed for going to school if a girl in afganistan Rules are NOT rules & the same paper had an artical about a teenage boy who was tortured & thrown under a train for sending a love letter to a girl of a differents caste. moreVoting Question: Religious people, do you think religion should be questioned by non-believers?

I have always held very liberal views with politics. Now I am beginning to humor the fact that I my be a lesbian, or at least bi-sexual. I don't exactly go out and look for trouble and I try my best to blend in. I'm an eighteen year old collage student who has never had a boyfriend or gotten into any sort of trouble. At first glace I seem like a very average and boring person, but it seems that I think in a totally different way than many of the others around me. So am I just a walking taboo? I keep my personal findings about myself very privet. The only thing that limits my job hunting is being a vegan, but that's not really a big deal. moreResolved Question: World History Help Please?

I received this from a client of mine who lives in FL: This will probably be my last email on this subject before the election. I hope you will prayerfully and seriously study the choices we have, and then go and vote your convictions. You need to remember, you cannot undo your vote. Once cast it is final. If we make a mistake and put the wrong man in the white house, we cannot recall him. We will have at least four years, happy or not. Sadly, it appears we now have a three party political system. A Democrat party, A Republican party and a black party. For years we've seen people who would vote along party lines, both Democrats and Republicans regardless of the candidate. Now we are seeing people who will vote along racial lines regardless of the candidate or his policies. (http://www.bpmdeejays.com/upload/hs_sal_in_Harlem_100108.mp3) This has always been and continues to be insanity. It stems from ignorance and laziness. People who don't care enough to study the candidate and learn who he really is. People who learn what the candidate really believes and stands for and then voting for him regardless of his party. I hear people saying things like "John Mc Cain is the lesser of two evils". This is wrong. What has he ever done that is evil? Is his Christian religion evil? Is his voting record evil? Is his military record evil? Was it evil of him to have every bone in his body broken while refusing to leave captivity before other American hostages? Is his wife or family evil? Are his associates evil? Is his running mate evil? On the other hand, what about Obama's voting record and comments on abortion, same-sex marriage, Islam, what about his associates with known terrorists and America hating preachers? Are these evil? Is it evil to take money from one person against his will and give it to other people? Is it evil to punish those who are wise entrepreneurs by taking their wealth away and giving it to lazy and ignorant people who won't study and work? Please look at the photo attached and see what this man reads. See the kinds of things he feeds his mind. This is a Muslim approach to the subject of a world after the overthrow and destruction of the United States. Our choice is very simple. We have a genuine patriot who loves America, and we have a man who does not love this country, whose wife has spent her entire lifetime never being proud of this country until her husband became powerful. How will you vote? I pray we will make the right choice, because remember, on Wednesday or next year we can't undo it. America has been the greatest nation on earth. Socialism didn't make America great. Islam and Muslims didn't make America great. Immorality, New Age thinking, Left wing liberal politics didn't make America great. A weakened military didn't make America great. A congress controlled by lobbyists didn't make America great. God-fearing bold politicians who voted their heart-felt convictions and Bible-thumping preachers, praying people, strong moral convictions, protection of the weak and unborn, equal rights for all people, honesty, integrity. These are the things that made America great. People who stood for right. People who have humanitarian spirits. A strong military. A strong Christian influence, A strong economy that encourages and strengthens businesses. These are some of the things that made America great. PLEASE!!!!!!! However you feel, whoever you believe, whatever you want, go and VOTE!!!!!!!!! That is what has made this country great. A government by the people of the people for the people. That's pretty sick and as an independant voter, it definitely solidifies my support for Obama. McCain supporters (as evidenced by your answers) are not voting on issues. You're voting on 'other' things. I'll leave it at that. moreResolved Question: Why are most homicidal terrorists muslim?
What do you think about this article? Psychology Today Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature # Most suicide bombers are Muslim According to the Oxford University sociologist Diego Gambetta, editor of Making Sense of Suicide Missions, a comprehensive history of this troubling yet topical phenomenon, while suicide missions are not always religiously motivated, when religion is involved, it is always Muslim. Why is this? Why is Islam the only religion that motivates its followers to commit suicide missions? The surprising answer from the evolutionary psychological perspective is that Muslim suicide bombing may have nothing to do with Islam or the Koran (except for two lines in it). It may have nothing to do with the religion, politics, the culture, the race, the ethnicity, the language, or the region. As with everything else from this perspective, it may have a lot to do with sex, or, in this case, the absence of sex. What distinguishes Islam from other major religions is that it tolerates polygyny. By allowing some men to monopolize all women and altogether excluding many men from reproductive opportunities, polygyny creates shortages of available women. If 50 percent of men have two wives each, then the other 50 percent don't get any wives at all. So polygyny increases competitive pressure on men, especially young men of low status. It therefore increases the likelihood that young men resort to violent means to gain access to mates. By doing so, they have little to lose and much to gain compared with men who already have wives. Across all societies, polygyny makes men violent, increasing crimes such as murder and rape, even after controlling for such obvious factors as economic development, economic inequality, population density, the level of democracy, and political factors in the region. However, polygyny itself is not a sufficient cause of suicide bombing. Societies in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean are much more polygynous than the Muslim nations in the Middle East and North Africa. And they do have very high levels of violence. Sub-Saharan Africa suffers from a long history of continuous civil wars—but not suicide bombings. The other key ingredient is the promise of 72 virgins waiting in heaven for any martyr in Islam. The prospect of exclusive access to virgins may not be so appealing to anyone who has even one mate on earth, which strict monogamy virtually guarantees. However, the prospect is quite appealing to anyone who faces the bleak reality on earth of being a complete reproductive loser. It is the combination of polygyny and the promise of a large harem of virgins in heaven that motivates many young Muslim men to commit suicide bombings. Consistent with this explanation, all studies of suicide bombers indicate that they are significantly younger than not only the Muslim population in general but other (nonsuicidal) members of their own extreme political organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. And nearly all suicide bombers are single. moreVoting Question: HELP ME IN MY FRIENDSHIP... I REALLY NEED UR HELP?

Can anyone explain why all the other morbid sins are now redundant? http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/drlaura.asp "Dear Dr. Laura, Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them. a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die? i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? They established a country based on NATURAL laws and natural rights. Since there is no offical religion that means.....secular. The Alaska governor was raised in a Pentecostal church and has called herself "as pro-life as any candidate can be." To Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religion Liberties Commission, Palin is "straight out of veep central casting." The 44-year-old mother of five, who led her high school chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was baptized as a teenager at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church, where she and her family were very active, according to her then-pastor, Paul Riley. But her home church is The Church on the Rock, an independent congregation, Riley said. "The church was kind of a foundation for her," said Riley, who said he gave the invocation at Palin's inauguration and had her address students at the church last month. As a politician, Palin has sided with the majority evangelical view in opposing gay marriage and expressing a desire to see creationism discussed alongside evolution in schools. During a 2006 debate, she said she was a proponent of teaching both evolution and creationism in schools. She later clarified her stance in an interview with the Anchorage Daily News, saying that she doesn't think creationism needed to be part of the curriculum and that she would not push the state Board of Education to add such alternatives to the state's required curriculum. Not only does Palin oppose abortion as a matter of policy, but she chose to give birth to her youngest child, a son, after a prenatal exam indicated Down syndrome. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evangelicals energized by McCain-Palin ticket August 30, 2008 9:02 AM EDT Sarah Palin already has energized conservative religious leaders who had fretted that John McCain would pick an abortion rights supporter as his running mate. THANKS .... . moreResolved Question: Just a Question About Religious Right and Moral Politics?
Background: I'm currently at one of the top divinity schools in the nation pursuing my master's in religious studies (specifically Bible studies). The religious right always seems to explain their morals through use of religion (99.9% of the time, "Christianity"). They claim they are against "big government," yet they support bans on a woman's right to choose and amendments that would ban homosexual couples from getting married; not only do they support these political actions, but they often project hate speech and discrimination at people who oppose them. They generally claim that they're against "big government" in terms of "communism" and their money going into programs that help the destitute and those facing adversity---where are the morals here? Perhaps you can find singular, isolated passages completely removed from historical context that you think admonish homosexuality and abortion (although it has not been proven when "life" begins)--but you can't deny that Christ never projected hate speech or condemnation and broke bread with sinners when the rest of the world shunned and tormented them. Also, in the Bible there may be a few admonishments against these "sinful" people you condemn, but for each of those there are ten that condemn the greedy and the wealthy--those who would not help brothers and sisters in need. Christ condemned those who would not be willing to sacrifice their earthly desires for a higher good--namely living up to one's religion by helping to love his or her neighbor as himself or herself. *** So I guess my question is, will the Republicans and/or conservatives explain where they're coming from when they claim that their own take on moral authority should be implemented into government--oppressing others with differing beliefs but serving themselves by keeping the poor unaided and the wealthy rolling in it? *** Source: Bachelor's degree in philosophy and religion and taken MANY classes from well-respected Bible scholars, on top of the numerous texts I have read and close study of the Bible and the context in which it was written.Eric, you obviously know nothing about the context in which the Bible was written--and the way in which you attack my studies only demonstrates to prove your ignorance. Those "ifs" that you mention are not well-defined and quite obscure--apparently you "let people know" about the ifs by perpetuating hate speech and legislating discrimination and condemnation, and by looking the other way when hate crimes are committed. You also undoubtedly take a large role in drawing the lines of morality so that you do not fall under categorization of immorality but others do. Tell me, do you burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, as in Lev. 1:9? Have you sold your daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7? Have you possessed a slave from a bordering nation, as approved in Lev. 25:44? How do you put your friends to death for working on the Sabbath (Exodus 35:2)? Do you let yourself eat shellfish, which is condemned in Lev. 11:10?Is your vision 20/20--you know otherwise you're not allowed to approach the altar of the Lord (Lev. 21:20)? I certainly hope you don't trim the hair around your temples... which is forbidden by 19:27. I hope you don't know a farmer who grows two different crops in the same field... and I hope for your own salvation you don't ever wear a cotton/polyester blend (Lev. 19:19). And I'm an A-student who graduated with academic honors--not to mention my mentors fully support my argument. moreResolved Question: Strategies for dealing w/parents with extreme views?
I'm an adult with elderly parents who get more extreme all the time. They are right-wing, politically, to the very extreme level and Christian fundamentalists. Whenever they visit they try to "save" me or my son and talk nonstop about whoever their favorite political person is now (Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin, etc). I've done a lot of study on my own and have become over the years a moderate-to-liberal. I don't bring up any politics or religion when they're around but they'll start "talking up" their latest favorite right-winger or worry about "my salvation." I can smile and nod but afterwards I fume and never want to see them again. Our family is the peace-at-any-cost type (we never discuss my brother--who has views like theirs but also all sorts of problems with not being able to hold a job or control his drinking--for instance). In other words, there's no room for a mature discussion. If I indicate any difference with their opinion they get nervous, then upset, then angry. Anyone have any ideas about how I can cope? Books and experts I could consult or online resources that can help me tune them out and stay even-keeled when they visit? I'll never change them, I can't stop them from trying to change me...I just want to have better control over my emotions, let their talk "wash over" me... moreResolved Question: I'm going to be a failure. Anyone else agree?
I'm 16 years old. I go to an all male school. I don't keep in contact with any girls. More about that later. I'm a senior. I'm also finished. I have come to the realization that I am screwed when it comes to college and my adult life. Here is my schedule. I have 3 free periods. I have 6 classes. There are 9 periods in the day, each lasting 40 minutes. My schedule is: Biotechnology/Forensic Science(Standard Course), Ethical Decisions(Standard Course), Film Study(Elective), AP Government and Politics(Elective), Introduction to Literary Criticism(Standard), and Precalculus(Standard). Do you know what this means? I have 6 classes. One is a RELIGION course, and the other is a FILM STUDY course. This looks like a schedule for someone whose either a slacker or a dummy. When the colleges I'm applying to see this, they're probably going to throw my application out the window. I only have 1 AP class. How am I going to stand against people who have 2, 3, 4, even 5 AP classes? The majority of my classes are standard. One is even Film Study where you watch movies all day and write criticisms of them. I messed up my high school year. Sophomore year I had some pretty good grades, in the beginning. Junior year was a giant train wreck. I failed my 1st Semester Math Exam in January and I barely passed Physics and Math with a C.... What will the colleges think when they see this? My GPA is about.... 2.9 give or take since last year. 2.9... Hah. I'm so stupid I surprise myself too. The thing is, I don't even smoke weed, which makes you stupid. I'm pretty sure even people who smoke weed have a higher GPA than I. I have had no contact with females since middle school. I have not had sex, have not gone on a date, or even come close to kissing a girl. Shit, I'll be dammed if I've even held hands with one. Know what that means? No wifey! Yay. I'm gonna be a phailure! I want to do Graphic Design in college. However, I have no portofolio. I'm not even sending one in because they would look horrendous. I really like Graphic Design, but I'm certainly not the best at drawing. I'm screwed. How can I compete? It's over. I'm finished. Stick a fork in me, I'm done. I let my parents down. All that money they spent of me; wasted. I know I'm probably letting them down anyway. My parents have little money as it is and they're wasting it on me? What the fuck? I made a homeless failure emergency kit, so when I stop living with my parents I can have some provisions for at least a little while. I just want to die or something. I'm not killing myself, no way. I just want to get shot or die. Just disappear from this world and go to oblivion. It will be better off without me anyway. I'm so frustrated. Nothing's going right for me. If you only knew. Fate deals a cruel deck. Don't tell me I need Prozac or any antidepressants. That seems like it's the only answer people give these days. That's all America seems to be on. Prozac. No wonder people are so "happy". They're too fucked up on pills to see the reality of life. There's nothing happy about it, just a long winding road of sadness. moreResolved Question: How many here have become an ex-tian through bible study?
You're supposed to grow in faith when you study the bible right? It had the opposite affect on me. After 30yrs I've opened my eyes and my mind. As I studied I saw the inconsistencies, contradictions, errors, and other items. I began to study with different translations, accurate and not. I began to look at archaeology and scholarly work done on the history of christianity. I learned about the order in which the new testament was written. The affects of the religion when it mixed with Roman politics. All sorts of things. It started with a loose thread and now the whole tapestry has unraveled. Bottom line is that Jesus, if anything, was a Jewish Rabbi probably not even named Jesus. His followers turned him into a God and a Messiah. His teachings are not unique. Christianity is a mystery religion that was born from Judaism and the religions of Greece started by Paul. etc. etc. etc. etc.l Now I'm basically a deist of sorts. Fun part is my whole family and my wife's family are a mixed bag of fundamentalist and "normal' Christians. Does that make me a black sheep?Heh - study brought on more unanswered questions and when I found the answers I was a little surprised. Jesus' main message to love God and love your neighbor is a concept that has been around long before him, and long after. moreResolved Question: Isn't possible that by now, terrorist countries might have found a way to infiltrate our political system?
Isn't possible that by now, terrorist countries might have found a way to infiltrate our political system? I was not born in the States, but this is my home now and forever. I have lived in other countries and I know that life, although never perfect, it is indeed better here in our land of the free. You may question your freedom all you want, but believe me when I say that our nation truly gives us plenty of it. One thing I can tell you is that I believe in keeping America as free as humanly possible of corruption, which abounds and plagues most countries in the world, including pretty much all the countries of Latin America, where I come from. If keeping corruption out is possible or not, I have no idea, I am as human as you are. But in following my beliefs, I know that no one will treat America as the fragile Icon it is in the midsts of current times, and with as much love as it always needs, than someone who has always lived here. Someone who truly knows his people by growing up with them, living among them; seeding in his/her soul the love for his/her compatriots. Knowing that Osama Bin Laden studied here in the States as a young man, and supposedly what fed his hate for our nation was the experiences he went through during that time (this is to the best of my knowledge, I am no expert in politics). We know that just as he did, any other terrorist could have been here amongst us much earlier…or later. I believe that his hate was already there before he came here to study, and just as he hated us before and came here to learn our ways, to eventually find a way to hurt us, I also believe that anyone who knows how welcoming we are of any religion and of anyone in general, just as long as they come legally (I don’t have anything against any aliens, I was once an alien myself, now a nationalized American, but we all know that we Americans only welcome with open arms legal aliens); would have groomed someone, either first generation American not truly integrated into society…maybe American people who are only called so because they were born in America, but lived their childhood abroad, or born from American parents, but who either did not live here in those crucial years of their youth when we learn who is really in our circle of friends, which most psychologists agree, are the first 6 to 7 years of our life. Anything is possible. I would however really trust in someone who always lived here and loves his nation, and if by any chance, this person fought for our nation, this person has my admiration, my gratitude, and my vote of confidence. I believe that there are a few members of this confidence circle that I can mention. General Colin Powell would get my vote with my eyes closed, even after what happened with this entire Iraq scandal of weapons of mass destruction never found along with Bush. We were all angry and confused when the Twin Towers went down, and we were all searching and pointing at all corners for a target to strike. Much like in the Roman times, we were all yelling our government to identify the perpetrators and to strike. Condoleezza Rice is in my short list, and yes, John McCain is in my list. Hillary is also in my list, and I am not saying that they are not corrupt or do not have faults. We don’t even know that well our own family to know what they would do if they had unlimited power in their hands. We would want to put our hands in the fire for them, and unfortunately many times we would end up burned…but there is more hope in those people than there can be on a “maybe would be a good president” With our nation in so much turmoil, it is not wise to give our presidency to anyone to play to be the good president. Our nation is no one’s playground. Our lives are no one’s chess game, and we cannot just give away the control of our lives to the first good looking, soft spoken amateur to play around with. The way our leaders grew up is a question to scrutinize very carefully, since it truly influences the way we think as adults. The possibility of eventually being infiltrated by terrorist nation’s well groomed pawns all the way to our core is very latent, and we should not make hasty decisions when our lives are in jeopardy. Loving the world, wanting world peace, loving the ecosystem, are al great and extremely important things, but for a president, loving his country and his people comes first. Loving God is also important…but which God? Hopefully one that represents peace and respect for life…and never one that calls for war. War is a human lowly business, and it is enough with us dealing with our deficiencies, let alone allow ourselves be guided by what we conceive as a high being, agreeing with our poor, and sometimes capricious decisions to invade, or obliterate other people, or other nations, or control how people should dress, or speak, or discriminate our race or gender among so many other discriminations certain religions promote (eithPS: When I mentioned terrorist nations, I meant to say, nations that harbor and support terrorist factions, which really it isn’t the same thing, since we cannot assume that all the people in such nations support terrorism. moreResolved Question: Please Score My SAT Essay! Roosevelt told Congress in 1941 that "...we look forward to a world founded upon for essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression.... The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his [or her] own way.... The third is freedom from want.... The fourth is freedom from fear." Assignment: All four freedoms are crucial in a free society. Yet, Roosevelt may be faulted for not adding a fifth, a sixth, or even more freedoms to the list. Given the opportunity to add another freedom, what would you choose? Feel free to invent a new freedom or simply pick one that already exists in the Bill of Rights or elsewhere. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your observations, experience, studies or reading. ESSAY Can we ever truly separate church and state in society? Can politics really exist outside the realm of religion? As long as religious fundamentalism proliferates, I doubt it. While freedom of the government from obstructing religion has been long sought, freedom of religion from obstructing government is far less ostensible but far more exigent. The catastrophe on September eleventh, 2001, a day the world will never forget, epitomizes the danger of the influence of fundamentalist regimes in government. Fatal are the consequences of any mass movement which advocates homicide and brutality; thus, the Taliban who exemplify such a movement should not ever rise to power or myriad lives might be devastated. How can any society function effectively when the heads of state preach murder and hatred? When religious radicalism becomes out of hand in a region and infiltrates the government, it is unlikely any progress can be made. For example, the formerly Taliban infested Iraq has been anything but productive during the last several years. Instead it is war torn and leveled in many areas. Consequently, there should be safeguards in government that can truly desist any religious minority from speaking and acting for the majority. Although religious fundamentalism may only seem to affect only foreign countries like Iraq, it is closer than people might think. During the Bush administration (lol), Conservative Christian values often influenced many political decisions. More than any other controversy, gay marriage has sparked a powder keg of political animosity and further stratified opposing political parties. Ardently opposed by Bush and his sympathizers, gay marriage is seen as immoral through the lens of the bible. As a result, gays are deprived of their right to a pursuit of happiness, which is cited by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence as a fundamental, innate right. Religious principles should not dictate the decisions of political leaders not only because they often have destructive consequences but because they defy the very logic that our country espouses. So how is it possible that religion could have such a stronghold in politics! In the United States of all places, religious fervor continues to cloud the minds of those in power. Their decisions not only have political ramifications but scientific ones, too. In the field of medicine, the advent of stem cell research holds immeasurable promise but inflames much debate over its religious considerations. As piquing as a fully body rash, debates between stem cell research pundits and religious "scholars" over the extent to which scientists "play god" only waste time that could be used to save lives. But even still, Senators, Governors, Mayors, City Councilmen and representatives with any form of political power deny scientists of their much needed grants to continue research. Religion and government really only cause people to butt heads about matters that would take merely a fraction of a second to decide in a more logical body politic. Might a Senator be stricken with incurable liver cancer one day god forbid, it would be a pity for him to realize that he petered his own chances of survival when he struck down grants for stem cell researchers. It is no surprise that when religious extremists be it the Taliban or a Congressman of the Bush Administration seize power, a wake of destruction follows in their path. Freedom from religion, thus, is indescribably vital to any society. Therefore, the "United" States of America that FDR had in mind will forever be a misnomer if we continue to let religion in government tear us apart. Well, I have just gotten my schedule and I want some opinions. My current schedule is as follows: AP Biology - 1st Period Homeroom Biotechnology/Forensic Science - 2nd Period Ethical Decisions - 3rd Period Lunch - 4th Period Film Study - 5th Period AP Government and Politics - 6th Period Introduction to Literary Criticism - 7th Period Free Period - 8th Period Precalculus - 9th Period As you can see, it's quite a packed schedule. I also got screwed on having 9th Period free if 8th Period was Precalculus. You see, I was planning on having either 1st or 9th free in my senior year. I wanted to either come in late or leave early, depending on whether it's Blue(Period 1-9) or Gold Week(Period 9-1). However, I did not plan on taking TWO science courses as well, because Science is not going to be my major. I didn't realize I had to take Biotechnology/Forensic Science as well with AP Biology. No thanks. I'm doing AP Government already. I might end up dropping AP Bio and taking the first/last free. I can't move Precalculus up to 8th period because I'm taking World Religions 8th period in my second semester. So, what do you guys think? Drop or not? I'm probably going to drop it. moreResolved Question: will these make my brain smart?

Honestly; I think they'd look at all the american's at McDonalds stuffing their faces with cheeseburgers and find that we are a repulsive breed. They'd study our behaviors and think we we're absolutely crazy (Television, religion, politics, internet, Jerry Springer & Maury Povich show, and so on) And they would get back in their space-ship and leave, going back to their planet to tell all the people about the "Crazy Humans" Hahaha. When you imagine the US Presidential campaign may just be a fine art form in sociological demographics on prejudice if say Condi and Hillary get chosen. Imagine when we are weak we are strong and when we are strong we are weak, about being well balanced in politics? Consider the vast majority of men where for one reason or another feel sexism is the new racism? Where being fair skinned someone jumps down your neck hypersensatively being disrespectful prejudiced based on their experience with past prejudiced and rather than being in denial rather than talking on issues of race, religion or other prejudice well even sexual orientation we looked to the talk as an art on philosophy where we considered the other folks feelings? Women have had sufferegettes, unequal pay yet a lot of younger women or men might not study history or know why we are here now? Would this hurt Hillary or Condi to be impertanent or hateful to men rather than inclussive or kind? Where is the love? Bill !!!! moreWelcome to Study Of Religion And Politics News
